Seismic Design

The Seismic Design team designs a high rise office building and constructs a scaled balsa model to analyze its seismic performance. They try to engage members in hands-on earthquake and structural engineering from the design to the construction process. Since the team competes in an international competition, the team often travels to farther cities such as Memphis, Seattle, and Anchorage. UCLA has won the first place prize for the past two years in a row, beating out rivals such as USC.  The team hopes to create more innovative designs and promote a fun and friendly atmosphere this year.  Perhaps even adding a third victory to the streak?

Last year at the EERI 2013 Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition, ten structures survived all three ground motions: 1940 El Centro, 1994 Northridge, and GM3 (Davis). Out of those 10, UCLA placed first scoring high on the income,  seismic cost, and analysis prediction categories.  To the right is the video of the structure surviving the three ground motions and of the periodic natural frequency shaking which finally took it down (in the black and white film).
