Steel Bridge

ASC 67 - Concrete Canoe - Steel Bridge - Seismic Design

A tightly welded group, Steel Bridge works hard to design and fabricate a scale steel bridge, then assemble it during a timed competition on the regional level. The bridge is judged on its economy (construction time and weight), deflection under vertical and lateral loads, as well as aesthetics. The design and ordering of materials is done during the winter by the leadership (Project Manager(s) and Directors). During the winter, everyone gets to be involved! We work multiple days a week and endless hours on the fabrication of the bridge during which you get to use power tools (and make sparks!) and hand tools to help complete the project. Make sure you wear some clothes you don't mind getting dirty because things can get messy!
At the annual ASCE Pacific South West Conference, we use a team of between 3 and 6 members to build the bridge during a timed session. Both the number of people and build time go into our construction time. We then load the bridge with 50 lbs laterally and 2400 lbs vertically and are judged on the deflection. Each of these aspects add up to a cost, and the bridge that has the lowest cost wins!
Last year we got 5th out of 18 teams, but most importantly, we were NOT one of the 9 teams that failed the lateral test! This year, we are pushing to be in the top 3 and go to Akron, OH for nationals.
