We will start the year by discussing the best possible mix design, followed by the construction of the bowling ball and then we practice the skit and bowling to finish strong in the competition.

No follow-up workday, every workday will have different agenda. Every bruin is expected to work with five core values of True Bruin in mind.

RESOURCES

Concrete bowling is a project where students design and build a bowling ball. It is one of the most interesting projects we do within our club that makes students apply their creative and technical skills. Several mix designs are discussed during the workdays of the project over the course of the year. This design balances aerodynamics, strength and aesthetics related to concrete. Mold is used to make the bowling ball perfectly spherical. Throughout this project students get hands-on experience with mold construction, concrete mixing, concrete de-molding, concrete sanding, while fine-tuning their bowling skills. Not to forget, this is a great team building activity as well. At this year’s competition, (PSWC 2014, April 3-6 at SDSU) students needed to bowl the ball on the grass lanes, and also perform a skit that complements the theme of the ball. We chose “Flintstone’s” to be our theme, it was really fun.

Every year we compete at ASCE - Pacific Southwest Conference with 18 other major universities from southern California, Nevada and Arizona. With all the hard work and dedication of the team members over the course of the year we were able to achieve 3rd place overall out of total of 18 other colleges that competed in Pacific Southwest Conference (2014) in San Diego. This was a remarkable achievement by our project and an improvement compared to the previous year where we were 4th overall.

CONCRETE BOWLING

We’ll discuss different types of concrete mix design to make our ball strong and durable, this is more theoretical part of the project.

MIX DESIGN

During this process we will apply the selected mix design to cast the bowling ball using the mold and make it look PERFECT, just like the ball in a regular bowling alley.

MATERIALS NEEDED

No matter how large or small the project is, keeping budget is always a concern. And in any student-run organization, raising money is a major issue. It would be an understatement to say how grateful and appreciative the members of Concrete Sports will be if you could donate the following.  While we are one of the smaller projects that ASCE has to offer, we still take what we do very seriously.  Donations allow us to create a better final product, and allows our team to express their full creativity without having to worry abour the limitations that a lack of funding can bring.  Please contact Project Manger Karan Patel or Project Director Tom Wissel if you are interested in sponsoring the team.

HOW TO JOIN

Feel free to show up to our workdays anytime throughout the year in Boelter 2745 or LS 2836! There is no prior knowledge or experience required to participate. Work days will be posted on our website, or you may contact our project managers more directly:

FAQ

Why students find Concrete Sports interesting and productive?

Being a sports fan in general, concrete sport was the best option for one of our members to get involved within the on campus clubs. As he was looking for hands-on experience work within our civil engineering department, project of concrete sports was something that was easygoing and very interesting at the same time. It was a perfect connection between his academic and sports interests.

What if I’m not enrolled in Civil Engineering Program?

Concrete Sports is open for any Bruin, and you are guaranteed to have fun if you get involved in the project, no matter what major you are enrolled in.

PROJECT WORKDAYS/EVENTS

During the Fall and Winter Quarters, Concrete Sports decided on a mix design and theme. They also tested their construction skills by casting a prototype of the bowling ball. After analyzing its pros and cons, the final bowling ball was casted. The skit was removed from competition.

Where are they now?
