Writing Workshop (Organized by Matt Stewart)
Posted October 9, 2014
Representatives from the UCLA Undergraduate Writing Center led a session Tuesday, October 7 at Boelter Hall 4275 that helped improve students writing skills. Topics addressed included writing introductory emails to companies, following up with companies, and writing professional emails on behalf of a company you are interning with. This workshop came at an opportune time at the beginning of the quarter and before UCLA ASCE's Fall Career Fair. It helped improve their writing skills and be prepared to impress companies with their writing skills!

Posted October 9, 2014
Engineering Welcome Day is the event planned by Engineering Society and UCLA that welcomes the entire incoming engineering class including freshmen and transfers.
Booths from different engineering clubs are on showcase and speeches are given by UCLA Engineering Staff and Alumni. UCLA ASCE showed a strong showing in terms of volunteers and interest this year.

Engineering Leaders Conference
Posted October 10, 2014
The Engineering Society of UCLA (ESUC) hosted the Engineering Leadership Conference for another year. This event allowed ASCE Officers to hear from successful UCLA graduates and network with other UCLA Engineering organizations. The event was a success that allowed us to get some potentially important contacts that may prove useful as the year goes on. I recommend that
we attend this event in thefuture. It was a fun event, I learned a lot, and we may have some opportunities later that we wouldn’t have otherwise.

Paddling Kickoff (Organized by Abby Gunning & Maxwell Armenta)
Posted November 10, 2014
Paddling Kickoff took place at Marina Del Rey on an early Sunday morning October 19, 2014. This event is an important annual event for Concrete Canoe because it is an opportunity to recruit new members for our project and the paddling team. This year we had three canoes on the water at the same time, while other students learned about paddling strokes on the dock. After we finished paddling, we had Korean BBQ. The event was very successful and helped us recruit new members for our project.

Laser Tag (Organized by Ariel Siegel)
Posted November 10, 2014
As the first social of the school year, approximately 25 ASCE members went to a laser tag facility on October 22, 2014. The event aimed to encourage participation from new members, while strengthening and building old and new relationships between members. While the event was located farther from campus than expected, members, both old and new, still had an enjoyable time.

Pumpkin Carving (Organized by Ariel Siegel and CalGeo)
Posted November 10, 2014
In celebration of Halloween, ASCE partnered with Cal Geo for a pumpkin carving social on October 29, 2014. The program aimed to foster relationships between members of the clubs in a fun and inviting environment. The program was successful and included a good turnout with multiple new members attending. The program could be improved for the future though by purchasing more carving supplies and pumpkins.

Vine Street Elementary Halloween Carnival (Coordinated by Jon WIgman)
Posted November 10, 2014
The event was hosted at Vine Street Elementary School on October 31,2014, but YMF contacted us to ask for volunteers. We worked in the haunted house for the event! The largest difficulty was the time of the event (12PM-3PM) during most people’s classes, so gathering volunteers was difficult. We showed up late as I had a midterm 11-12, but once we had something to do at the event it was a lot of fun!

ASCE Alumni Tailgate (Organized by Allison Light)
Posted November 26, 2014
There was a great showing at our 4th annual ASCE Alumni Tailgate on November 1, 2014! Current UCLA engineering students were able to reconnect with their recently graduated friends as well as mingle with older alumni and learn about life after college. The casual atmosphere of the tailgate was perfect for even the most shy engineers to open up and share a few laughs. Events like this are important for both students and industry engineers—to let them relax, and connect in an informal setting.
Fall Class Planning Workshop (Organized by Blake Wyatt)
Posted November 26, 2014
This workshop is designed to help all ages, especially underclassmen, plan their schedules. An academic counselor came to give a short presentation about the class planning resources Engineers have, like degree audits, sample plans, and scheduling worksheets. She stayed to answer questions and help each student individually. The upperclassmen also stayed to help the underclassmen plan their schedules and give advice to them. The only issue was a confusion in room scheduling, but that was quickly solved and another room was found. Overall the event was very successful and many attendees said it was helpful and requested that this be an event that happens quarterly.
BN Builders Infosesion (Organized by Matt Stewart)
Posted November 26, 2014
Chris Clement and Ryan Hipp spoke to about 30 UCLA ASCE members at BJ’s Restaurant in Westwood on November 10, 2014 about their company and the projects they are working on. This was the first info session of the year. The event was also unique as it was hosted off campus, as was suggested by Chris Clement. BJ’s turned out to be a tough spot for the info session because everyone was crammed into the upstairs area, the wall wasn’t a great spot to project the presentation, and it was noisy. However, pizza and drinks were served, everyone crowded around Chris and Ryan, and the event turned out to be successful.

Universal Studios Field Trip (Organized by Abby Chung)
Posted November 26, 2014
This field trip on November 20, 2014 was to the construction site of a 4000-car parking garage at Universal Studios. Morley Builders, the general contracting company for the project, gave a presentation about the project and the basics of concrete preconstruction, followed by a tour of the job site. The trip was helpful for members who wanted to experience a construction site, as well as those who will be attending the Sparks construction management competition.

Winter Career Fair (Organized by Vatsal Gupta)
Posted April 2, 2015
The ASCE Career Fair gives industry the opportunity to meet both undergraduate and graduate students who are seeking potential internships or full-time positions. Company representatives from 27 different companies including BNBuilders, County Sanitation District of Los Angeles, ENGEO, Englekirk, John A. Martin & Associates, Kiewit, KPFF, RMC Water and Environment, Shannon & Wilson, Shimmick, Structural Focus, US Army Corps, W.E. O’Neil, W.L. Butler Construction, and Walsh Group talked to students with hopes of hiring some of them for internship or full-time positions. In all, the career fair went really well and many companies provided positive feedback on their experiences. The career fair is extremely vital to ASCE, both for the club and for the professional development and success of our members.

Saxon Suites Field Trip (Organized by Abby Chung)
Posted April 1, 2015
This field trip was to the on-campus construction site of UCLA’s Saxon Suites construction site. Manolo Gonzalez, Icon West’s project engineer for the site, gave a tour of the job site. Due to the trip being during 10th week, student attendance was low. It was interesting to see the renovations being done to UCLA residential buildings.
