We have weekly informational meetings in the ASCE lounge (Boelter Hall 2745). These meetings will last around one hour and will mainly be used as a logistical planning session. Seismic Outreach officers will be in attendance, but every ASCE member interested in the program is encouraged to attend.

  • All members that attend this meeting will be able to help out with logistics of the program as well as the creation of a curriculum for the 6th grade students.

  • A time for weekly information meetings has not been decided, but it will clarified in the future.

In addition,  we will have between 2-5 middle school workdays throughout the quarter.

  • These will likely take place on a Friday. Members and officers drive to the middle school and conduct in class lessons, teaching students about basic structural engineering.

  • We will also introduce students to a K’NEX building project. This project is designed to help students gain experience within the structural, architectural, and economical aspects of civil engineering.

And finally, we will have School Finale days, where each middle school will come to UCLA for the final judging and testing of its students’ structures. During the event, we will need member participation in order for the day to run smoothly.

RESOURCES

Our project is all about teaching students in the LA area about Civil Engineering through hands on construction activities.

History of the project

  • With the help of UCSD, Seismic Outreach began at UCLA in the spring of 2014.

  • Last spring, we took on one school with a total of 150 students.

  • The event was an enormous success, and this year we are looking to add an additional 300 students.

Seismic Outreach is actually the only ASCE project that does not have a final competition. We are a community service based organization focused on helping children in the Los Angeles area gain a background in Civil Engineering.

All of our major work happens either at middle schools in the LA area (teaching students about Civil Engineering concepts) or at the UCLA campus (testing and judging students’ structures).

LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Officers and members will come together in order to organize events and create a curriculum for the middle school students.

PROJECT WORKDAYS/EVENTS

GROUP PLANNING AND INFO MEETINGS

Members and officers will carpool to middle schools. Here we will teach students about structural engineering and help them with their K’NEX tower project.

SPONSORSHIP

MATERIALS/RESOURCES NEEDED

No matter how large or small the project is, keeping budget is always a concern. And in any student-run organization, raising money is a major issue. It would be an understatement to say how grateful and appreciative the members of Concrete Sports will be if you could donate the following.  Please contact Project Manger Ryan Worley, Project Fundraiser/Director Ariel Siegel, or Project Director/Community Service Chair Jonathan Wigman if you are interested in sponsoring the team.

HOW TO JOIN

Feel free to show up to our workdays anytime throughout the year in Boelter 2745! There is no prior knowledge or experience required to participate. Work days will be posted on our website, or you may contact our project managers more directly:

SCHOOL FINALE

One of these will be held fall quarter, and either one or two during spring quarter. These will last around 3 or 4 hours and will be comprised of testing and judging our student’s structures. Students will also be given a tour of the school and will be allowed to meet faculty and industry partners.
